The semiconductor industry demands packaging materials with extraordinarily precise properties. Static electricity — invisible and often overlooked — is one of the leading causes of damage to sensitive electronic components during storage and transit. At Heshan Xinglong, we've developed a specialized anti-static black PE film manufactured entirely on our in-house blown film extrusion lines.
The Static Electricity Problem in Chip Packaging
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can destroy semiconductor chips instantly or cause latent damage that leads to premature failure in the field. Traditional packaging materials like standard polyethylene generate and hold static charges, making them unsuitable for sensitive electronics.
The industry requires films with controlled surface resistivity — typically in the range of 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms/square — to safely dissipate static charges without sudden discharge events.
Our Solution: In-House Formulated Anti-Static Black Film
Unlike most flexible packaging companies that purchase commodity films from third-party suppliers, Xinglong operates 2 proprietary PE blown film extrusion lines. This gives us complete control over the film formulation, allowing us to:
- Custom-blend anti-static additives directly into the PE resin at precise concentrations
- Incorporate carbon black for both light-blocking and conductivity properties
- Control film thickness to exact specifications (ranging from 40μm to 200μm)
- Adjust mechanical properties — tensile strength, elongation, and puncture resistance
Key Advantage: Because we extrude the base film ourselves, we can iterate on formulations rapidly. Custom surface resistivity targets, specific thickness requirements, or unique mechanical properties can all be achieved without minimum order quantities from external film suppliers.
Why Carbon Black?
The black coloration isn't merely aesthetic. Carbon black serves dual purposes in our anti-static film:
- Conductivity: Carbon black particles create conductive pathways within the PE matrix, providing inherent and permanent anti-static properties (unlike topical anti-static sprays that wear off)
- Light blocking: Many semiconductor components are light-sensitive. The opaque black film provides complete UV and visible light protection
Applications
Our anti-static black PE film is used for:
- IC chip trays and covers
- Wafer shipping containers
- PCB board wrapping
- LED component packaging
- General ESD-sensitive electronic parts
